Cattle Mineral

Megan Hasenour | Marketing Communications Manager

It’s important to not make the mistake of thinking your cattle mineral and supplement needs are met by tossing a salt block into your pastures.

3 key things when selecting a custom mineral program:
  1. There is no such thing as “One Size Fits All”
Your cattle herd’s nutritional needs are not consistent throughout the year. They change from month to month, through different stages of growth and with age. Younger cattle tend to require an optimal amount of protein supplements, while older cattle often struggle consuming enough feed to obtain optimal energy levels – this is why cattle need to receive supplements based on their needs.

  1. Quality over Quantity
Supplements should emphasize a precise mineral ration, targeting areas that are deficient when needed the most that time in need and proven to be successful.

  1. Education is Essential
Stay educated and up to date on new and enhanced minerals. Work with one of Superior Ag’s Livestock Nutrition Sales Specialists to design a custom mineral and supplement program – it could be the most profitable farming decision you make this year.

A general rule of thumb, feed intake of mature cattle usually follows two forms:
  1. Non-lactating cattle gaining about 800b daily eat dry matter equivalent to 2% of their body weight.
  2. Lactating cows eat dry matter equivalent to 3.2% of their body weight.
